Tanghalang Ateneo's 41st season, Écriture Féminine/Sulat-Babae: The Women's Season, closes with the British playwright Caryl Churchill's contemporary classic play Top Girls, in a new Filipino adaptation by Palanca Award-winning playwright Liza Magtoto (PETA’s Rak of Aegis; Caredivas). It is directed by by Issa Manalo Lopez, one of the most exciting contemporary performance-makers working in Manila today.
The play famously opens with a strange, magic-realist dinner party between the lead character Marlene and various female figures in history and art -- which, in Magtoto’s localized adaptation, will feature Filipinas like Teresa Magbanua and Sisa -- and ends devastatingly with the other women in Marlene’s life, who were all left behind in her meteoric rise to the top.
